Rabbi Dorit Edut
Starting in September of 2005 Rabbi Dorit Edut, comes to Temple Israel about twice a month to lead our congregation. Rabbi "Dorit" is from the Detroit area where she grew up and also raised her three children. She knew at age 13 that she wanted to be a rabbi, but this was not something that was possible in the 1960's - so she waited and became first a public school teacher and then a family and crisis counselor, working in Detroit and Redford.
In 2001 she began her rabbinic studies and was ordained in May 2006 at the Academy of Jewish Religion in Riverdale, NY. As part of her rabbinical experience she served as student rabbi for the Boro Park Progressive Synagogue in Boro Park, Brooklyn, for Temple Benjamin in Mt.Pleasant,Michigan, and here at Temple Israel. She has also served as Education Director of the Kane St. Synagogue in Brooklyn, NY, and as the Hebrew Coordinator of the Family Education Program at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, MI. Rabbi Dorit has also taught in many different Hebrew schools in the Metro Detroit area since 1972, including Congregation Beth Shalom where she first met and befriended Rabbi David Nelson.
Dorit is a member of the Michigan Board of Rabbis, a lifetime member of Hadassah, a member of the Friends of the IDF, and a member of the Interfaith Alliance. She is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where she met her husband Shimon Edut in the late 1960's. They have three daughters - Ophira, Tali, and Leora- who all live in NYC. Rabbi Dorit hopes to bring many interesting educational programs for all ages and spiritually stimulating worship to Temple Israel.
